Commuting in New York City this week was an excellent reminder of how simple and effective using the tool gratitude can be. Stuck in a subway, with thousands of other sweaty passengers, feeling the urge of a negative thought about my situation, or the “You should have gotten on a different car, rode the bus, walked….Whatever!” start to come up, I looked around me for inspiration. Instead of going to the negative place, I realized how grateful I am to be in this seemingly uncomfortable situation; I was on my way home to see my dog, have a meal with a good friend later that evening, I had a great session with a client, I could afford the Metro pass that got me on the train, I was able to physically get on the train, I had my phone (and had a phone, think of so many people who don’t) so that I could listen to music, and look, only a few more stops to go!
With a little shift in perspective, we can all make the best of any situation. Try it for yourself, and let me know how gratitude shifts your mood.
